LCF Ceramics

I am Laura Claire Fyfe and this is my ceramics business. Iā€™m a small batch potter based in South East London. I work from a studio shed in my garden and make functional tableware out of stoneware clay.

The majority of my pots are made on the wheel, they are then dried until leather hard at which point they can be trimmed, carved, decorated and have any necessary handles attached. Once they are fully dry, they go into the kiln for their first firing, known as the bisque or biscuit fire. This removes any remaining traces of moisture and changes the state of the clay into ceramic. At this point the material is able to absorb glazes without disintegrating, so the pots are waxed, glazed, some hand painted and then fired again to even hotter temperatures (a whopping 1280c, which incidentally is as hot as lava). After a final little check over and any rough bottoms sanded they are ready for your homes.

Due to the hand-crafted nature of my work there will be variables in sizes and glaze finishes. This is all part of the beauty and marks the tactility of the process. Everything is built to be personal, functional and aims to have a handmade feel to it.

If you would like to see some of my pots in person please do get in touch as my studio very much has an open doors policy. Alternatively, sign up to my mailing list to be kept in the loop with the dates of the various Fairs and Markets where I will be peddling my wares.
